Pranopy May 17. Martin Tierney died this morning from lockjaw caused by injuries from an assault a week ago Saturday. The assailant, a man named McAuliffe, has vanished and is at large.
A seven story Washington Mill on Park Street burned from 9:05 PM, threatening neighboring Pemberton and Pacific Mills. Mills employ over 15,000 nearby, with losses pegged around 150000. Fire departments from Lowell Haverhill Methuen Andover battled the blaze through midnight with walls collapsing and authorities declaring danger over by morning. No injuries reported. The plant’s history traces to Bay State Mills and later Washington Mills with capital tied to 4 to 5 million across adjoining properties.

An express train on the Providence & Worcester road struck and killed a man walking on the track at Blackstone station. The deceased, about 65, was identified via papers as John V. Craig, a navy veteran who enlisted from Haverhill, was discharged at Fort Donelson in 1865, naturalized in Dover, New Hampshire, and belonged to Knights of Labor Assembly 4816. He stood 5 feet 8 inches tall with a dark complexion.
London May 17 The debate on the coercion bill resumed this evening as Sir William Vernon Harcourt moved an amendment to exempt from secret inquiry all proceedings relating to agrarian meetings and rent reductions. Critics argued the measure could criminalize breaches of contract and Irish tenant rights while supporters warned the amendment would render the bill futile. The amendment was defeated 242 to 180, the first clause passed 171 to 79, and eight second clause amendments were announced, including one by Sir Charles Russell to shield tenant combinations.
