The body of Mrs. Mary Collins was found in bed at 84 Willow Street Hoboken with a fractured skull and gashes on the forehead. James Collins a 37 year old Irish born porter at Claflin & Co. shoe store is under arrest after witnesses say he admitted knowledge of his wife’s death. A blood stained jumper and hammer handle were found in their home. The two boys, sons of the couple, are held as witnesses.
Mr William McCarty a respected Roxbury figure and former West Roxbury town clerk dies at his Perkins Street Jamacai Plain home from apoplexy Born November 1802 in Roxbury he served twenty years as town clerk and led Roxbury police He retired eight years ago leaving a daughter and three sons The funeral will be held this afternoon from his residence
Hon. Benjamin Babcock Thurston died at his home in New London Connecticut from gangrene after a needle pierced his foot a week earlier. Born June 29 1804 in Hopkinton Rhode Island he served as Rhode Island lieutenant governor at 36 and represented the western district in Congress from 1851 to 1857. Survived by two sons Benjamin Fr and John D both lawyers in Providence a son George E a revenue service lieutenant a daughter Mrs Ingalls wife of Captain Ingalls U S A and Fanny R Thurston.
Edwin C. Woodruff former town clerk treasurer and judge of probate at Guilford Connecticut and a prominent member of New Haven county bar died Monday at his home.
The Gloucester ward and city committee met in the Police Court rooms on May 17 selecting Councilman John H. McCormick as temporary chairman and John Favor as temporary secretary.
The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company met at Faneuil Hall and arranged its June excursion. A committee was appointed to draft resolutions on the death of Colonel Ezra J. Trull. One member was dishonorably disenrolled for conduct unbecoming a gentleman.
