Washington's HRemains and War-Time Orders

Washington May 17 General Mansfield ordered Adams's Express agents in New York Philadelphia and Baltimore to stop all express matter going south of this city by telegraph. Col Stone seized contraband goods per his order and allowed others to pass. Ex Governor Reeder named Brigadier General by the President. Washington sees a travel rush as the Baltimore line reopens and an Irish brigade of 1009 men is expected to arrive. Departments receive many job applications but cannot answer them.
