News reports May 4 that American warships have arrived at Queenstown and are ready for action. The ships are on duty under Admiral Sims with crews hailed by cheering jackies. No mishaps to any vessel are reported.
London May 16 Premier Lloyd George in a letter to John Redmond outlines a home rule settlement. A key feature is the suggestion to convene an Irish convention to draft a constitution if Nationalists and Unionists cannot agree. Matthew Smith 22 a member of the Ninth Regiment Massachusetts National Guard is jailed on assault charges after throwing a stone at 7 year old Lillian Marks of 39 Bromley Park Roxbury injuring her skull. The incident followed jeering by a crowd of children as Smith and a companion strolled along Bromley Park. The girl is in City Hospital. The Ninth Regiment armory denied knowledge of the matter.
The weekly British submarine losses report notes a remarkable fall in U boat activity. Vessels sunk over 1600 tons fell from 24 to 18, total sunk vessels halved to 23 excluding fishing ships, while arrivals and departures reached a high with 42 ships attacked and 45 percent repelling.
Liberty Hall, base of the Irish Transport Workers Union, and Hibernian Hall, Irish American Alliance venue, were ordered closed for alleged sedition. Last week republican flags flew from these buildings to celebrate a Sinn Fein victory in South Longford Parliament elections.

Washington May 16 A vigorous movement to raise the war revenue surtaxes began in the House under Rep Lenroot of Wisconsin and Rep Sherley of Kentucky. The plan would add 2 percent to incomes over 40 000, passing 98 to 87 amid cheering.
Yesterday in the National League Chicago defeated Boston 8 to 0 and Pittsburg beat Philadelphia 12 to 4. New York St Louis and Brooklyn Cincinnati games were affected by wet grounds. In the American League Boston beat Cleveland 5 to 1 and Chicago topped Philadelphia 3 to 2 with New York 5 St Louis 2 and Washington 5 Detroit 1.
