Town authorities moved the Belcher family and three children to a segregated structure after a blaze and fever left them homeless. The incident underscores the era’s responses to urban poverty and public health concerns.
Ashae Shelter Tramps and Drunks report on a mother and her three daughters aged 14 8 and an infant held in a Norwood lockup near Boston. Scarlet fever in one child leaves them without a place to stay after their home was destroyed by fire. Townspeople refuse shelter for the family while other inmates share the lockup.
Seventeen people are rescued from a five story apartment house at 122 Warren Avenue after an incendiary fire in a basement room. Miss Bessie Thompson is listed as a danger list patient at City Hospital. Firemen carried out residents as smoke filled all floors. A boy saw the flames and alerted authorities.
On Jolo Island in Manila May 15, U S troops under General Leonard Wood engage a Moro force led by outlaw Pala in what a dispatch calls the fiercest fighting since American arrival. About 300 Moros lie dead, seven soldiers killed, 19 wounded as cornered combatants prefer death to capture.
In Norwood on May 14 the Belcher family, including 14 year old Gertrude scarlet fever, 8 year old Mabel, an infant Nellie and their mother, are kept in the town lockup due to lack of suitable quarters after their home burned. The father, honest and industrious, had just begun rebuilding in the old Day street chapel when the fire occurred at 3 am. Town officials moved the family to the lockup, where conditions are harsh but the town doctor works to prevent spread of illness. The police provide food and bedding as Mrs. Belcher tends to her children amid illness and hardship.
New York details Herbert V. Croker's romance with Miss Toinette Horton, engaged after turning from heiress Miss McCurdy. Horton and her mother planned a ranch wedding, while Croker previously courted Miss McCurdy amid wealth and social standing, before his death in Kansas.
Richard Croker Jr. arrived in Newton Kansas and directed the body of Herbert Croker be prepared for shipment. He said autopsy would depend on the mother’s wishes, doubting its likelihood, and identified clothing as belonging to Herbert. Croker noted no jewelry or much money on the brother and that Herbert’s baggage is missing after shipment from Kansas City to Bliss Oklahoma.

Chicago May 14 Jessie Bartlett Davis noted actress died of heart disease brought on by nephritis at her home. She fell ill Friday and never recovered after becoming unconscious Saturday morning. She rose to fame with the Bostonians, later in vaudeville, and her last opera engagement was Erminie with Francis Wilson. She was married to Will J. Davis, theatrical manager.
A crowded Taunton to Fall River electric car jumped the track near the Taunton River about 10 PM. The car crossed the State highway toward the river before stopping. Passengers were frightened. one man had a small cut from broken glass and all windows were shattered. Motorman John Scully and Conductor Frank Avery were aboard. no serious injuries reported as passengers moved to safety and traffic resumed.
A local forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for showers on Monday with a warming trend. The outlook notes increasing temperatures as the system passes, bringing milder conditions afterward.
A rear and first floor blaze at 35 and 37 Kingston street in the woolen district was discovered around 10 PM. In Burlington Vermont on May 4 J. J. Moore 21 a private in the Fifteenth United States Cavalry stationed at Fort Ethan Allen was drowned in Lake Champlain. Corporal Ray E Alvord his companion from Boston was held on a charge of intoxication. A row boat hire ended when Alvord was found clinging to a capized vessel and Moore was not recovered.
General Wood with detachments from the Fourteenth Cavalry Seventeenth Twenty second and Twenty third Infantry and Constabulary Scouts surrounded a swamp where Pala and his followers were cornered after a massacre he ordered. Pala a noted slave trader and warrior fled to Pula Sekar near Borneo and later to Jolo where the uprising formed.
The Moros on the island of Jolo have resisted American efforts to subjugate them. The Sulu Islands lie between Borneo and Mindanao. The group’s population is about 75,000 in an area of 950 square miles. The ruler is the Sultan of Sulu.
Commander Eva Booth of the Salvation Army collapsed in Orchestra Hall due to an ulcerated tooth. She was taken to her hotel and her physician said she is not in danger and will continue her journey to Kansas City tomorrow.
