The New York Herald faces rumors that James Gordon Bennett has lost sole control as his name disappeared from the editorial column. Reports claim John W. Mackay lent funds and a stock move could vest ownership, while Bennett travels to Europe and executives stay tight lipped. A later dispatch denies the relinquishment of Bennett’s control, saying the rumors are without foundation.
A party from Prague touring en route to the World's Fair arrived in town and checked into Parker House. The group includes Baron Ringhoffer F A Hering Alen Richters Irving Richter Otto Flomisehek Victor Erixleben and S Lollmann. They plan to depart for the West tonight.
Nathan White of Attleboro was thrown from a bicycle on the hill above the Falls. An electric car passed over his right foot, crushing it badly. Surgeons amputed the foot just above the ankle this morning.

Adams K Tolman a Boston merchant died at his Highlands street home in West Newton after a two week illness. Born in 1848 he trained in Boston and worked with Isaac Fenno Co. He served as Ward 5 alderman in 1889 and later sat on the Newton Water Board. A Mason and member of the Boston Merchants Association he attended the First Unitarian Church of West Newton and leaves a widow and two daughters.
Luigi Carpi of 157 Endicott Street reported to Division 1 police last night that his son Guiccdo, 11, took an iron box with nearly 170 dollars from the house during the evening. He fled with another boy named William Richie, described as tall for his age.
E Q Batchelder aged 66 died yesterday in Lynn from a complication of diseases. He was formerly a real estate agent and had been an invalid in recent years.

Gloucester May 14 Leading a rescue from sea Captain Henry W Thurston and five crewmen from the schooner Modesty arrived at port. Modesty, 127 tons built 1867 at Derby Conn, sailed from Seal Harbor Friday with cargo to Bangor owners Henry Lord & Co. of Bangor. A northeast gale blew sails to rags and caused a leak. Modesty sank riskily but all aboard were saved with the Leader keeping afloat amid heavy seas. The vessel and cargo were partially insured.
