Death of Dr. Alfred Hosmer in Watertown
Dr. Alfred Hosmer longtime Middlesex County surgeon died at his Riverside Place residence after a week of heart and lung illness. Born 1832 in Newton Upper Falls he trained at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital and settled in Watertown in 1857. He held numerous medical and civic positions including president of the Massachusetts Society and the Watertown Historical Society, served as post surgeon at Watertown Arsenal, and funded care for indigent patients. Funeral is at First Parish Church with schoolhouse flags at half mast.

NEARING THE WHITE HOUSE End of the President's Trip
The President's party arrived in Springfield Illinois on May 14 with a salute and crowds. Governor Fifer and Mayor Lawrence greeted them as Lincoln monument ceremonies took place at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Fifer welcomed the President who praised Lincoln and noted emancipation. Speeches by Wanamaker and Rusk followed. In Indianapolis the party was welcomed by Indiana friends, tears flowed as the President spoke, then the train proceeded toward Washington after remarks by Governor Hovey and Mayor Sullivan.
