In Bern on May 14 Emperor William met delegates of striking miners for a fifteen minute talk. He said he would protect tranquil workers and warned against Socialist agitators while urging a peaceful settlement. He noted a thorough inquiry into the facts and suggested troops could be used to quell riots if necessary. If the strike lasts two weeks Paris gas works could be paralyzed.

London May 14 William O'Brien M P has obtained a writ against Lord Salisbury for libel arising from a Walford speech in which the premier charged him with advocating murder and robbery of men evicted from farms. The action stems from that speech.

In London on May 14 the House of Commons defeated Mr. Dillwyns motion for Wales church disestablishment by 284 to 231. Unionists mostly supported the majority while Mr Chamberlain sided with the minority. Mr Gladstone and Lord Hartington were absent.
Lord Lonsdale of Lowther Castle arrived in Montreal on the way home from a North Pole expedition. He brought back numerous bird and animal specimens and many photographs, disputing U S press rumors about his Arctic journey and praising the support of the Hudson Bay Company officials. He plans to stay in his future role as secretary to manage his father's estate following the death of his secretary.
Mont Treat May 14 Judge Loranger grants the motion to strike out most allegations in the Jesuit Mail libel case but allows testing the act's constitutionality. The ruling covers the form and imperial and British North America act references, rejects vows and books as irrelevant, and the Mail plans an appeal to the Privy Council of England.
Yale athletes set three new marks as Clark cut the two mile bicycle record to 6:21, Hinckley lowered the half mile to 2:03, and Shearman raised the pole vault to 10 ft 5 in. Bellwether performances by Deming, Robinson, Harmar and others highlighted a closely contested program under perfect weather at New Haven.
Curry of Mexico May 14 ex president Lerdo del Tejada funeral held with a grand military pageant. President Diaz and cabinet officers the diplomatic corps and over a hundred generals participated. About 8000 troops and 6000 citizens attended. Students gathered for patriotic speeches, a proclamation praising the deceased and censuring the government was suppressed by police.
Washington May 14 Chauncey M Depew faces suit for 1500 after Edward C Towne claims he arranged data for the Depew centennial oration and was promised payment. Towne, Yale class of 56, says Depew offered 200 and never used the material. Depew denies a fixed sum and says 200 was liberal.
St Paul May 14 The South Dakota election on the Sioux Falls constitution drew light turnout but produced an overwhelming pro constitutional majority. Delegates to the convention were split two Republicans to one Democrat. North Dakota and Montana reports note similar conventions with minority party representation.
May 14 Curiaco dispatch reports Cronin murder friends plan six miles along the shore and a mile and a half into Lake Michigan dredging with divers. A Toronto despatch signed H J Grassette says Cronin has been in the area since Friday but unseen since 11 a.m. Sunday.
The Livermore Centre cheese factory burned with losses over 2000 dollars, origin unknown. In Cohasset Harbor the Lothrop heirs building housing a carriage cushion shop burned. Tower's stock loss about 800 dollars, building loss 800 to 1000 dollars, all uninsured, incendiary suspected. In Sandwich Cape Cod a severe storm struck Barnstable causing Old Colony station to burn. nearby Roxbury saw a grocery store fire at 30 Conant Street, owned by Francis Gilligan, with damage about 500 dollars.
