Fires burn three barns and seven tons of hay in Exeter
Capt Nathaniel Gilman’s three Exeter barns were destroyed on Thursday night with seven or eight tons of hay and seventeen oxen lost. The fire is believed to be incendiary, and insurance partly covers the loss. Meanwhile railway earthworks advance on Caen to Cherbourg with guard houses up and terminus masonry nearly done. Bridges on the Vire and other lines progress, and a major metal bridge commitment proceeds. In San Francisco, Mrs Weekes of the Atheneum elopes with $1500, exposing a long pattern of literary bigamy and debts. Boston notes Gen Schouler’s return to lead the Boston Bee, a shift from his old editorial posts, prompting social commentary on his career and the new role.

W S Tuckerman Begins 21 Year Term At Weathersfield Prison
William S. Tuckerman was taken to the state prison at Weathersfield to commence a twenty one year sentence. The Hartford Times notes his methodical habits, neatly kept accounts, and a belief he will survive his term to rejoin outdoor life, while accusing the government of lax mail security that aided his robberies. He gained twenty two pounds during two and a half months in New Haven jail and asked for a carpeted sleeping room, which the warden denied.
