Socialist Party Nominates Debs Upholding Revolutionary Programme
The Socialist party of America pledges no retreat from its programme as Debs is nominated. Hillquit, leader of the conservative faction, notes the party remains unchanged and receives strong support. A five member committee plans talks in Washington with Attorney General Palmer for amnesty for political prisoners and a White House audience for a memorial to President Wilson. Other meetings with Secretary Tumulty and War Secretary Baker seek amnesty for conscientious objectors. The convention adopts Hillquit’s platform to pursue the campaign on conservative lines.
