Navy setback sobers radical reformers after Winslow loss
Washington May 12 The American blockading squadron suffered a setback in Cardenas Harbor with the torpedo boat Winslow losing five men. The incident cools advocates of rapid action using unarmored ships and likely prompts an inquiry into responsibility for sending such vessels against fortified forts. The older officers say other boats were poorly protected and vulnerable to rifle fire.
