Hewitt bill seeks tariff and free list extensions changes

Washington May 12. Mr Hewitt of New York introduced a bill to modify duties on imports and internal revenue taxes and enlarge the free list. It sets new rates after June 30 1884 for brandy and after Jan 1 1885 caps several schedules, imposes 90 percent of current duties on most articles, and 80 percent for tobacco. It repeals iron rivet tax and allows refunds on fence wire rod duties. A Worcester remonstrance opposes telegraph monopoly. Harbor improvements bill directs New York harbor work with bid cap and staged payment. Other items include underground cables experiment and bills for Springfield public building and Grant retirement. Wallace seating approved in Ohio case.

Fire reports across New England area May 12

Brief telegraph reports from Boston and vicinity describe a coal shed fire on the New York and New England railroad wharf extinguished by the railroad brigade. A separate blaze on the West Boston bridge involved baled hay rolling from a team after a driver’s pipe start. Other notices cite fires in David Meyer’s brewery in New York, William Moses’ house and barn in Portsmouth, a LaGrange fire in Bangor, Kentucky lumber mills in Williamsburg, Riverside in Springfield, and James Spear’s North Hadley house fire. Man kills wife and child then himself in New York

Isaac D. Edrehi, a 60 year old chemist living apart from his wife Theresa, visited her 124 East Tist Street. After a quarrel over reconciliation he fired a revolver wounding his wife, killed their 5 year old son, and then shot himself in the temple, dying instantly. Also, 7000 to 8000 fans witnessed a glove fight at Madison Square Garden between Charley Mitchell and Billy Edwards ending in a draw after Edwards was knocked down.

Gloucester council quorum caper in late meeting

At a Gloucester city council gathering a half hour recess saw seven members slip away leaving a quorum short by one. A messenger recruited the nearest of the three absent members home could not locate him. his wife says he is at the meeting but left at nine sharp. She jokes she has trapped him and he will finally appear late, exhausted by the long session.

Japanese mother and child to join baby show in Horticultural Hall

Manager Kyle of the baby show in Horticultural Hall has organized talks with New York parties over the past week to engage a Japanese mother and child for the exhibition. The Japanese consulate facilitated the effort and a pure blood mother and her child signaled willingness to travel for a reportedly large fee. Kyle departed for New York late Monday night and is expected back tonight with the additions.
