Old Constitution flag among Massachusetts Historical Society relics

A rare flag from the frigate Constitution bearing the original 13 stars is displayed on the top floor of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The frame wood came from a discarded Constitution timber from Charlestown navy yard in November. The flag was donated by the children of W. P. Cherrington, with a letter recounting its voyage around the world via Leonard Dudley. A letter from General Benjamin F. Butler references the flag’s preservation amid Maryland riots in 1861 and the ship’s role in naval history as a training symbol.
