Belgian Retreat and Allied Plans Near Antwerp in 1914
On August 21 1914 General de Marionville reported Belgian forces withdrawing toward Antwerp to protect their left flank as German columns advanced through Belgium. The Belgian army of about 50 000 infantry 276 guns and 4100 cavalry planned to retire under Antwerp forts while awaiting Allied support and to cooperate where possible. Allied leaders and Allenby assessed the situation noting the Belgian retreat and continued German advantage, with French and British forces maneuvering to cover the retirement and potential counter actions.
