Robert B. Treat of Warwick, a cotton manufacturer and head of a two million dollar coal company based in Providence, assigned his estate for creditors. Assignee is John B. Allen. Liabilities about 250000 with assets about three times that. Market conditions and fear of sacrificing properties cited.
Reports from Medford indicate a key tip may place a local resident near the Sturtevant home under arrest. Police chief Holmes and State police general Whitney reviewed new evidence that could overturn rumors of an out of town suspect and trigger an immediate arrest in the Medford Hillside district.
The 433 Portuguese immigrants aboard the barkentine Vera Cruz III were driven ashore at Ocracoke Inlet North Carolina after a days long drift at sea. A revenue cutter will transport them to New Bedford while authorities assess relief needs and shore assistance continues.
Thomas W. Laws son buys northerly end of First Cliff from Mrs. John Ward expanding Dreamwold to the water front for the first time. He will build a slip for the Dreamer and the Cygnet, Arnold T Lawson's yacht, along the shore and move this summer from Cohasset to live on his stock farm in Scituate.
President Theodore Roosevelt visited Santa Cruz on May 11 enjoying a city reception. He toured Beach Hill and Pacific avenue greeted by thousands, then lunched al fresco at the Big Trees with 20 local young ladies serving. He urged preserving nature and removing name cards from the trees.
President Roosevelt will spend tonight in his private car at the San Jose station and start for San Francisco tomorrow morning with stops planned at Stanford University and Burlingame.

Frank Parruch, 41, of 3 Hale Street, was arrested on assault and battery charges after allegedly attacking Mrs. Mary Doyle at 2 Hale Street. He had gone to the Doyle home seeking a key. when refused, a quarrel ensued and Mrs. Doyle was stabbed in the back while seeking her husband’s aid. Her injury is described as not serious.
During a fire at the Pittsburg Bedstead and Spring Co building on Water Street three girls on the fourth floor leaped from a window into a net held by firefighters. They were seriously injured as the blaze caused about $50,000 in damage to the building and stock.
Burglars attempted entry at Dr. Benjamin Blanchard’s Brookline residence on 482 Washington street early Sunday, stealing a rain coat, silk umbrella, shoes and cigars valued about 35. An earlier break-in on Desmond Fitzgerald’s 40 Washington street was thwarted by an officer’s appearance.
Agnes Shea 45 of Dorchester was found unconscious in her room yesterday after exposure to illuminating gas. The room reeked of gas. doctors and police investigated, but officials ruled it an accidental incident with no apparent suicide attempt. She remained at City Hospital and was expected to recover.
The Gloucester schooner Judique ran aground on Enperre's Point while entering the Strait of Canso on Saturday. The vessel, reportedly little damaged, was hauled off by the tug F. W. Roebling.
On May 11 the Marlboro council again debated locating the new city hall to replace the one lost to fire months earlier but adjourned without reaching a decision.
Patrick Carroll aged 41 of 4 Webster Street East Boston drank two quarts of whiskey with friends. An officer found him on Warren Bridge in a stupor and he was taken to a relief station and hospital where he eventually revived. He vowed never to drink again.
At a Rock Island & Pacific stockholders meeting the Morgan deal to acquire the St. Louis and San Francisco railway was approved. Rock Island capital stock rises by 20 million with 29 million in Rock Island stock exchanged for 31 million of Frisco stock and the Frisco system turning over to Rock Island officials. An $18 million issue of 5 percent gold bonds accompanies the transaction.
Malden May 11 Walter H Cary long missing after vanishing from a Fall River steamer on December 6 is reportedly alive. Judge McIntire granted Arthur W Cary letters of administration on the missing brother property. Cary may be in the West and has sent word from the South or California.
Shanghai May 11 The Chinese Treaty Revision Commission has been instructed by the foreign office to decline further discussion with American commissions on Article 13 of the proposed treaty. The clause concerns opening Manchurian points to foreign trade.
The State Department reports Argentine foot and mouth outbreaks ban exports from Argentina. A new outbreak is found in a Framingham Mass herd. Wilson postpones lifting the New England quarantine, delaying action for now. Quarantines remain in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Boston and vicinity expect fair skies Tuesday and Wednesday with a partly cloudy layout. Winds shift to fresh south to southerly speeds, bringing mild temperatures and comfortable air conditions.
In Templeton, Eugene Hersay reports his son found seven adult rats and five young ones inside a meat bag. The rats’ nest lining impressed him, made of 589 postage stamps including 1 cent, 3 cent, and older stamps. The discovery occurred after the bag was brought from Williamsville.
