The Lawton Girl and Other Very Different Novels
The review surveys Harold Frederic s The Lawton Girl Octave Thanet s Expiation and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward s The Master of the Magicians as serious, well crafted if uneven novels. It notes Frederic s blend of manners and character, Thanet s Southern at-once humorous and poignant handling, and praises the historical imagination and Oriental atmosphere in The Master of the Magicians while flagging some narrative weaknesses.

Tariff Debate Says Free Wool and Higher Duties Harshly Burden Consumers
A long bill proposing protectionist tariffs is attacked for raising duties on carpet wool and many essentials. Advocates warn it would curb New England iron and coal industries, raise prices on tin plates and food staples, and burden consumers while failing to revive manufacturing. The debate covers sugar, silk, cabbages, eggs, and various iron and textile interests with many named firms and figures.
