In a House of Commons sensation Asquith admits Sheehy Skeffington, famed Irish writer, was shot on the revolt's second day by a British officer acting without authority. The officer is ordered court-martialed while Skeffington's wife is refused all news of his fate.
Citizens are urged to leave Mexico as bandits cross the border near Eagle Pass. Troops are rushing to the Mexican line to reinforce security and protect travelers and residents amid rising border tensions.
About 40 bandits crossed into the American side of the Rio Grande above Eagle Pass Texas and rode along the river for several miles before returning to the Mexican side. A detachment of the Nineteenth Infantry was sent to the scene.
El Paso May 10 reports that Mexico may seek an immediate partial withdrawal of American troops while leaving others to aid the de facto government against Villa bands. Observers say Pershing’s force is large for its mission and a smaller contingent could suffice. a partial pullback could carry political weight in Mexico. Americans in Mexico were warned to leave as 10,000 new troops arrive near the border.
From Bantry and London reports confirm no Americans aboard the Cymric after a torpedo struck the engine room during the White Star liner sinking. Four men died in the blast and the chief steward drowned while trying to reach a boat as crew abandoned ship. One hundred seven crewmen took to boats but returned when the steamer seemed safe. A sloop later rescued them about ten miles away.
In Concord New Hampshire on May 10 Ralph G Carpenter admitted his evidence failed to prove his wife Marguerite Paul Carpenter’s alleged infidelity with Garrison G Depew of Buffalo. The day featured intense cross fire as counsel pressed the case with General Frank Streeter present. Carpenter also disclosed a long running plan to gain custody of their 9 year old son Ralph G Jr.
The boy is described as the innocent sufferer. Carpenter testified that once he and his wife held the boy, he released him rather than pull out his arm or hurt him.
Florence MacDonald, 39, with pernicious anaemia, underwent two operations at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. More than a quart of her sisters May and Jeanette donated blood, enabling a transfusion from their veins to her, with her name still listed as in danger though improving. May lives on Calumet Street Roxbury and Jeanette resides in Claremont Vermont.
A heated Senate vote 17 to 18 rejected the Arlington Street station measure for the Boylston Street subway after House approval. Providence May 10 James R Miller president of the Chapin National Bank of Springfield Mass shot himself through the head on the grounds of Butler Hospital. He was found unconscious by a workman and died tonight after being a patient at the sanatorium for about three months.
Four injured in a runaway one seater owned by Otto Mauke after speeding past Oxford town farm. Frank Gensek Mrs Gensek Elizabeth Rotenburg and Otto Mauke were hurt. two seriously. The runabout struck a Worcester touring car driven by M H Fallon causing extensive damage.
Dartmouth freshmen defeated Andover Academy 5 to 1 at Brothers Field in Andover. The win marked the first loss for Andover this season as Dartmouth pressed the attack with multiple scoring plays.
Premier Asquith told the House of Commons that F. Sheehy Skeffington editor of the Irish Citizen and two others were shot in Ireland on April 26 by a subordinate British officer without trial or authority two days before martial law. Skeffington was buried at Portobello barracks and later moved to Glasnevin cemetery. the officer was arrested and will be court-martialled.
Governor McCall vetoes a bill allowing Boston to spend 600000 for widening Dorchester and I streets in South Boston. He followed custom by withholding details until the veto message is read in the Legislature. The governor did sign a separate measure lowering the Massachusetts vinegar standard.
