Boston park department steam rollers, meant for park use, are leased to private parties when idle. Superintendent Pettigrew says it has been done for years with no objections, while Mayor Hibbard says he was unaware of the practice.
Edward K Butler acknowledges a city steam roller was used on his Jamaica Plain grounds for driveway work last Thursday and Friday. Butler questions public scrutiny while park department workers cite busy season and needed equipment for plants, roads, and grass work.
In Messina area, the American Red Cross plans a 50 bed hospital and 200 person hotel at Villaggio Regina Elena. The Elizabeth Griscom Hospital will honor the ambassador to Rome’s wife, as the Italian Red Cross awards Mr. Griscom a gold medal for his work.
Reports from Rome claim the Duke of the Abruzzi, linked to Katherine Elkins daughter of Senator Elkins, attempted suicide with a revolver while en route to India after his engagement was abruptly ended. Officials say he has been despondent since the split.
The Boston fishing schooner Helen F. Thomas arrived with flag at half mast reporting three crewmen lost in a fog. Names given were William Morton of South Portland Charles Townsend of Halifax and Charles Smith of Cape Negro.
Gasparo Suarratta of Lynn was captured by Patrolman Milmore in Watertown square after an alleged attempted assault with a revolver. Bystanders say he fired several times. a loaded gun was later found on his person. He and Frank Guardara, Boston, competed for a West Watertown contract won by Guardara.
At Relief Hospital two accident victims suffered broken necks. Arthur McArthur, 17, of 9 Cottage Street Cambridge fell 20 feet down an elevator shaft at Hotel Rexford and died within hours. Harry Martin, 26, aboard the schooner Ransom B. Fuller, fell on stairs at an Atlantic Avenue cafe and was expected to recover.
Mrs Sarah Merico heard noises at her hennery and armed herself in a robe de nuit with a revolver and club. She chased two human intruders who loaded Plymoth Rocks into a wagon, later realizing they were her friends a man and wife, and she cried at the sight.
Kate G. Pearson of Story county Nevada filed a deposition in the Probate Court declaring she has never fought a duel nor acted as a second in any duel. She is appointed administratrix of Ellen Ford's estate in Nevada and sought possession of property in this city. The deposition affirms she will abstain from any duel related activity during her tenure.
Peter Ackerman, 55, died instantly in North Barnstead after a blow from Oliver Foss, 35, during a long running business quarrel. Foss was arrested. Ackerman had recent police and civil case history.
Brookline authorities reported one death and injuries to three people in a three hour span. Gertrude Gilman, 35, was found dead on Kilsyth road with heart failure. Thomas Finneran, 5 Albion street Roxbury, was thrown from a wagon on Harvard street and sustained severe scalp wounds. Ellen Gannon, 68 Hancock street Dorchester, injured from a car door on Ipswich street car. Dr Francis Denny, riding a bicycle on Tappan street hill, was badly injured and taken home.
East Boston faces a political clash over where to place a new Adams School primary. The Schoolhouse Commission has two offered sites Webster and Marginal streets from ex-Congressman Conry and the East Boston Land Company on Maverick Street, with Patrick Kennedy and John H. Sullivan and John Douglas tied to interests. No decision has been made yet.
This afternoon the trial of Roderick MacKenzie and Murdock McDonald for mer attendants at Pierce Farm charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Richard Mitchell on March 25 will end. Only a small portion of evidence will be presented this morning, after which the arguments will be made. It is expected the case will go to the jury early in the afternoon.
Takahira will spend Wednesday in Boston with a luncheon at the Tavern Club and a decorates President Eliot with the Order of the Rising Sun ceremony at the Hamlin home. He will address the Algonquin Club dinner and Harvard Cosmopolitan Club, then depart for Washington Thursday morning.
The Japanese insignia of the Order of the Rising Sun will be pinned on Harvard President Eliot tonight by Baron Takahira in recognition of his services to both nations. Eliot, modest about the honor, cites his connection with Harvard rather than personal merit.

A defective gas meter at 23 Haskins Street Roxbury last evening injured Mrs Annie Segool her son Harry Segool 18 George Linday 18 and Aaron Breen 55 the property agent Mrs Segool leaped from a rear window and suffered burns and hip injuries while two boys and a man were bruised
A gas explosion in a brick tenement injured four occupants on the first and upper floors. Harry Segool, George Linday, and Mr. Breen were fatally burned and sent to City Hospital, while Mrs. Segool was treated by Dr. O Connor and sheltered nearby. Ambulence crews and police responded as flames consumed the Sunday flat and panic spread through the building. Doctors later said the three men would recover with care.
