Hugo Mueller aged 82 a member of the produce exchange died this morning of morphine. The cause of death by own action is not known though he had losses in speculation. He reportedly wished to sever his membership with Ladenburg Thalman Co, a foreign banking house, and there is chatter that his wife is cousin to Augustus Bpies the executed anarchist.
The Boston Young Men's Christian Association celebrated its thirty seventh anniversary with an indoor gymnasium exhibition and the presentation of annual reports. The group reported 4928 members in the year, 470 in the gym, 603 registrations in evening classes, and 420 placements through education. An annual average of 600 men used the facilities daily, totaling about 219000 for the year. The Tremont row branch and the main building operated all year, with a net cost of 2212 11 for the branch. The Union Association grounds are leased for open air recreation this summer. The association seeks 10000 from citizens, with members contributing the same amount. 4770 has been subscribed. remaining 5280 is sought. Boxes 43 and 63 in Cambridge were sounded yesterday for a slight fire in the house owned by Mrs. Lovitt and occupied by a colored Clark family at 85 Cowperthwaite street. Damage estimated at about $50.

Delegates to St. Louis were named, a state committee elected, and a platform endorsed praising Grover Cleveland and calling for tariff reform and liquor-law enforcement. In Bartimore Maryland on May 10 the Democratic State convention made Colonel Douglas permanent chairman and elected United States Senator Gorman G H Hunt Colonel I V Bauman and State Senator Grown as delegates to the national convention. Delegates from congressional districts were chosen. The platform praises Cleveland and urges unity for his reelection while urging fiscal reform and limited taxation. Delegates are instructed to vote for Cleveland.
A public exhibition at the Boston & Lowell station demonstrated the Berry automatic light and fire extinguisher on a Concord railroad car. Addison Bowden showed lights going out automatically and, with a lever move, extinguishing both lamps and heater fire. The device uses air from the Westinghouse brake drum to pull lights out and a water chemical mix to douse the heater. The test drew many railroad men including Commissioner Stevens and Pullman’s Stockton. Canadian Pacific and Concord cars already use the extinguisher. The Canadian Pacific railway annual meeting reported earnings and infrastructure plans, with Sir George Stephen re elected president.
Letter from Captain R. M. Lavender from Pernambuco describes the March hurricane ordeal near Block Island. The crew reefed and fought to keep the boat afloat as sails were lost, boats washed away, pumps clogged, and passengers nearly perished before the bark Guy Goss rescued them.

Second Lieutenant Henry D Styer on leave in New York ordered to report to the superintendent of the recruiting service there to lead a detachment to the department of the Platte. Major George H Weeks appointed inspector of certain public animals at West Point Military Academy, reported unserviceable, Captain Joseph H Dorst responsible. Captain Paul R Brown granted six months leave of surgeon's certificate.
