Senate Acts on Veteran Engineers Bill and War Notes

Washington May 10 The Senate passed the bill authorizing the organization of the Veteran Engineers and took up the Bank bill. An amendment by Mr Collamer requiring one fourth of gold received as interest on Government bonds to be kept on hand until specie resumption was rejected. Sherman amendment on note redemption was adopted and the bill passed. In the House Mr Wilson Iowa reported the Interior Secretary to contract care and employment for persons sentenced to the penitentiary and arrangements for States or Territories without such institutions, then Missouri contest Spence Lane was resumed. The debate included a reading of a War Department communication endorsing Gen Butler's despatch. The House also considered Senate amendments to the Consular and Diplomatic Appropriation bill. Adjourned.

Enemy cavalry clash stirs Neuse River approaches near Newbern

The Eliza Shelton reports a Confederate defense against a Union cavalry demonstration two miles below Newbern on the Neuse River. A battery and four guns blocked riverwater approaches while gunboats Commodore Barney and Louisiana forced the enemy back. None of the Newbern to Beaufort railroad cars passed yesterday.

Gale Engulfs Nicardco Lake Shipping. Losses Reported

A powerful gale swept Nicardco last night causing heavy damage to lake vessels. About 30 ships anchored between here and Gresoe Point suffered. Major Anderson of Oswego ran aground likely total loss. Barbour and several schooners ashore. Storm wrecked near Evanstown with one fatality.

Hospital Stores For Our Wounded At Fredericksburg

The United States Sanitary Commission sent a steamboat chartered with 70 to 80 tons of hospital stores to Aquas Creek along with a barge carrying wagons and horses for lifting supplies to Fredericksburg or other points. Sixty relief agents and nurses accompany the expedition, guided by feeding stations to meet urgent needs.

Rebel forces led by Emory move toward Yazoo City

A Demopolis dispatch says General Emory with 11 000 infantry 2 batteries and 250 cavalry advances toward Yazoo City. A Charleston despatch reports 395 mortar shells fired at Fort Sumter Friday morning to Saturday night with 12 shells Saturday and 10 on Sunday. Vessels head south past Charleston bar. The rebel Senate weighs a vote of thanks to Forrest.

The brig Mary, sailing from Grae reine on April 21, was boarded at midnight near lat 14 Rio Gran long 53 by the pirate Florida.
