Fire starting about 2 AM swept York Beach Maine destroying the Sea View Hotel and threatening cottages and other hotels. By 3 30 AM six cottages were in flames with several hotels endangered.
The Daily Sketch reports Harry Lauder is seriously ill in London with an internal ailment from overwork. Two surgeons reportedly examined him and his wife said they hope to treat without surgery. Separately, a vote on an annex bill and then on a full crew bill shows mixed support in a crowded roll call.
Big majorities in the Senate toppled all three Governor vetoes with one overridden. The City Hall annex bill allowing 133 feet, seven feet above building limits, passed 26 to 8 and now goes to the House for action requiring a two thirds majority to pass despite the Governor’s objections.
Texas returns from Republican county conventions show Roosevelt with 50 votes to Taft 30 and 127 needed to control the State convention. Democratic conventions instruct Texas delegates to back Governor Woodrow Wilson at Baltimore. New Jersey Governor Harmon garners 1092 3 instructed votes and Speaker Clark 391 2. Oscar Underwood has no instructions yet.
A sensational arrest at New England Telephone and Telegraph Company headquarters on 101 Milk Street last night led to four trusted employees being held at police HQ and the Tombs. Frank H. Jellison, 34, chief clerk. Frank P. Holmes, 34, assistant pay master. Chester A. Wood, 26, storekeeper. and William Sandler, 21, clerk, all named from Medford South Boston Cambridge addresses.
In Baltimore on May 7 the Roosevelt camp maintained a slim edge for Maryland's 16 national convention votes as Taft managers refused to concede the outcome. Complete returns showed a tight contest shaping the delegation battle.
Chauffeur John Whelan narrowly escaped death when a speeding car ripped a temporary fence on the Columbus avenue bridge near the Back Bay Hotel. The auto, bearing number 6488 and owned by John McDonald, dropped into a 30 foot opening during repairs, then was dragged out by bystanders with little damage.
Lowell May 7. Industrial Workers of the World at Merrimack Manufacturing Company vote to strike tomorrow over time and a quarter for noon work. About 3500 workers faced official rejection of demands as a strong picket line and extra police detail are planned. Police probe into a long running payroll padding swindle involving Jellison Sandler Wood and Holmes with about 2000 allegedly diverted and bail set at 5000 each.
Washington reports deny rumors of orders to mobilize troops for the Mexican border. General Wood says no such orders have been given or are under consideration as war officials review distress stories from the west coast of Mexico and the transport Fordford is sent to assist distressed foreigners.
Bridgewater Massachusetts was attacked by Indians in 1676. The Mexican War began with the Battle of Palo Alto in 1846. The Battle of McDowell occurred in 1862 and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in 1864. Peary sighted Greenland’s north coast in 1900. Author Paul Leicester Ford was shot in 1902.
Forecast for Boston and New England shows unsettled conditions with occasional showers on Wednesday and likely Thursday. Moderate winds from the east to southeast accompany a rise in temperatures as the system moves through the region.
Attorney William A. Morse for Richeson blasts a Boston affidavit by Mrs. Louie Brittain that Richeson was a Mormon elder. He calls the charge a wicked, foolish lie and vows to publish the denial in large type. Brittain, formerly Mormon, testified under church backing that Richeson hid his past as a Mormon. The Evangelical Alliance aided her, with planned address forthcoming, though the affidavit remains uncorroborated.
The Rev. Luther Burnice Grice, former pastor at Free Baptist Church of Shady Hill Vermont, appeared at Charlestown navy yard seeking enlistment. Rumors of death by his own action and violence circulated locally as church officials investigate mysterious departure.
