Leaves of Maiden Hair tree planted for Gen Grant tribute

Li Hung Chang honors General Grant with a planted tree at the tomb site in New York. Yang Yu, former Chinese minister to the U S and current envoy to Russia, leads the ceremony attended by about 3000 people including Colonel Fred Grant and Mrs. Grant. The tree is Salis buria Adiantolia, dubbed Leaves of Maiden Hair, with a brief message read by the Chinese minister.

Gold testimonial cup presented to Ambassador Bayard in London

At a London banquet honoring former Ambassador Thomas F. Bayard and Mrs Bayard a solid gold loving cup was given as a testimonial by the American Society in London. The cup features a giant pumpkin weighing 175 pounds grown by Captain Kramer of the Third New York Cavalry and prize winners at Schoharie County Fair and Madison Square Garden. The base bears a map of the United States with eagles at the compass points and an inscription. the portrait bust of Bayard is by Effie Stillman. The cup cost over 2000 dollars and was made by Whiting Manufacturing Co of New York.

Bayard Farewell Banquet Attended by 270 in London

Barnes Found Guilty in First Degree Murder

Lorenzo Barnes was found guilty of first degree murder in the John Deane case from Maynard. The jury returned the verdict at 6:30 PM after two hours deliberation. Barnes showed no visible emotion, spoke calmly to counsel, and motions for exceptions were noted before sentencing.

Two Women Arrested After Release From Deer Island

Julia A Maguire and Frances Moran, freed from Deer Island where they served drunkenness terms, were arrested in East Cambridge with crying infants. Both claim marriage but know nothing of their husbands. They face Cambridge Court again for drunkenness. Maguire gets two years, Moran one year. Children likely to be sent to a home.

Land takings award by jury on Tremont street disputes

Hannah and McDonald as owners of two Tremont street lots affected by Columbus avenue improvement sought jury review before Judge Gaskill. The jury awarded Mrs. McDonald 2860 dollars and Rosa Merton 1007.60 dollars for damages.
