Senator Clayton to Close Testimony as Senate Exam Nears End

Senator Clayton, who began testifying yesterday before the Senate committee, will conclude tomorrow or Thursday and the examination will close soon after. The record will run about six hundred pages in pamphlet size. Despite talk of adjournment on the 2th instant, many House members including Gen. Banks doubt a sine die adjournment before early July. Fenton’s allies push for Greeley nomination. Senator Tipton arrived after speeches in Ohio supporting Cincinnati nominees. The tariff bill comes up in the evening session.

Baltimore Orioles defeat Olympics 22 to 5 in baseball

The Baltimore team routed the Olympics in Baltimore by a 22 to 5 score. A New York charter passed the House after amendment banning appropriations for sectarian schools. Scotch Education bill debate heats Commons vote

International Society troubles in Copenhagen

Police barred Sunday meeting of the International Society. President and Treasurer arrested amid street protests that alarmed onlookers. Military guards placed around public buildings and palaces as authorities pledge to suppress the uproar and prosecute leading members for high treason.

London reports show Consols at 23 with various U.S. bonds marked, dull trading and closing quotes around 92 to 104. In Paris Rentes stand at 54 francs 25 centimes while Frankfurt notes U.S. 5-20s at 98. Liverpool and Antwerp note mixed cotton, wheat receipts, and petroleum at 434 francs.

Chicago Banks Stand Ready To Meet Demands

In Chicago on May 7, reports state that fears of bank weakness are unfounded. Banks hold large balances in New York but remain well supplied with currency to meet business needs. National bank deposits total 27,406,655 with 22,143,352 in loans and 12,998,764 in cash means. Private bankers Lunt Preston and Kean report deposits of 1,241,127.

Supreme Court denies mandamus on Norwich colored school issue

The Supreme Court refused a mandamus against Norwich township school directors over admitting colored children to white schools. It sustained section 31 of the common school laws and held separate schools for colored youth do not conflict with the U S Constitution.
