A fierce lumber yard fire lit the sky while firefighters battled the blaze. Fire crews contained the flames and prevented spread to adjacent structures, saving neighboring property from damage. No serious injuries reported.
A large lumber yard at 107 Atkinson Street Roxbury burned last evening in a blaze that sent flames high across the sky. Three alarms brought fire boats and equipment but only the Leatherbee shed and dock were damaged. Oscar Whitham and family escaped. Estimated loss ranges from 40 000 to 100 000 if mahogany stock is ruined.
A 6 year old Ray Kyle of Longwood Avenue was killed when an inbound Allston car struck him near the Death Crossing at Huntington and Longwood avenues in Roxbury. The incident, the third death at the junction in as many years, prompted police to detain and later release the motorman Axel Evans and conductor Jay Corran as investigations proceed.
The Newfoundland lower house passes a foreign fishing vessels bill without division. It bans alien fishers, fines vessels or colonists for aiding foreign fishing, and asserts sovereignty within three miles. The measure heads to the senate amid warnings of harm to New England winter fishing.
The steam yacht Sultana owned by J Montgomery Sears of Boston arrived in port under tow by the El Rio after its boilers and machinery failed. The vessel previously departed Colon on April 19 with Robert Schwerin aboard and drifted until the Omatrox towed her to Islas La. the party disembarked and proceeded to New Orleans.
The Cigar Makers Union 97 2036 strong held a meeting at Faneuil Hall and voted to strike Monday over a raise from 50 cents to 60 cents per 1000 cigars. The union says all bodies will aid strikers and will patronize union-made cigars. the strike is supported by the national union and funds from 140,000 workers.
A Boston manufacturer presents the employers’ view of the wage dispute with the Boston Cigarmakers Union 97. Bartholomew Cuuity of Ames Street South Boston was found unconscious at Tremont and Rutland streets last evening. He was taken to City Hospital where he died from natural causes.
A head on collision between the Chicago mail train No. 21 and the Chicago and St. Louis express No. 18 on the Pennsylvania railroad near Springfield 18 miles from Altoona causes a rising death toll. Initial reports of 3 dead and 27 injured grew as eight to ten fatalities were later cited. Earlier a wreck at Union Furnace damaged 37 freight cars and forced rerouting via the Petersburg cut-off.
A special Canadian Pacific train carrying Halifax settlers from the Allan line steamer Carthaginian wrecked four miles west of Lowelltown Maine. Ten people were injured though none fatally. Objected cars derailed near the Maine Quebec boundary leaving passengers bruised and shaken.
In South Weare New Hampshire relatives disinterred the body of Mrs Ella Sargent Gove after her death from scarlet fever two months ago. Her bankbook was missing but found in the wrapper pocket used at burial.
London May 4 A cabinet council considered possible actions after Turkey ultimatum. Malta received sudden orders for the Mediterranean fleet to proceed to sea. Cruisers Carnarvon Barham Suffolk Venus Vulcan and destroyers head for Piraeus. Formidable Irresistible Leviathan arrive at Malta and will sail for Turkey.
