A severe fire in Melon Ohio destroyed E L Wilsons undertaking and furniture Ashley s jewelry Maggie Coes millinery Eggleston s blacksmith shop Fisher s barn Klines Hotel Town Hall and Presbyterian church along with five dwellings. Loss estimated 100000 to 125000 with only one third insured. Town Hall nearly new valued 20000 with 10000 insured. Church valued 10000 with 3000 insured. No city fire protection reported.
A fire at the Widow Freeze farm outside Arlington Nebraska killed seven, including Old Lady Freeze, Fred Gratchischen and his wife with three children, and Louis Freeze’s son. The barn burned with horses and cows. one theory suggests foul play, another suffocation during rescue attempts. The hired man is missing. no known feud or enemies.
An east bound Pennsylvania freight train of three oil tanks and fourteen freight cars burned near Wayne station after an oil car rail failed. Flames consumed much of the cargo with losses estimated at 75 000 to 100 000 dollars. Brakeman H M Chronister of Harrisburg was badly burned and may die.
