Granite cutters accept eight hour day and 14 percent raise

In Quincy Massachusetts labor talks between granite manufacturers and cutters conclude with a mass meeting vote to accept the manufacturers proposal. The agreement sets eight hours as a workday, a minimum wage of 33 cents per hour, and a 14 percent price increase for contraction of prices to be maintained for five years.

Boston Common Council Backs Boers Invitation

Hamilton drives Boers from Houtnek after tough ground action

London May 3 The War Office reports from Bloemfontein that General Hamilton broke enemy lines at Houtnek with light losses to British forces. Boers scattered east and north leaving twenty six prisoners including a commandant and sixteen wounded. Hamilton rests troops at Jacobsrust, Broadwood’s cavalry arrives to support. Bruce Hamilton’s infantry brigade joins Hamilton in the afternoon.

Skirmishing at Brandfort in Pretoria May report

Official war bulletin details British mounted corps at Brandfort on April 30 repelled by federals on two sides with two federals wounded and eleven prisoners. Another account notes Wakkerstroom and tmelo commands clashing near Brandfort with nineteen British dead and eleven more prisoners.

American Held in Johannesburg Explosion Case

The Standard and Diggers News reports Thomas Rich, an American, arrested as a murder suspect in the Begbie factory blast at Johannesburg. He was arraigned, remanded, and not defended. An excavation at the blast site found no tunnel and further digs are planned.

Officers of Division 4 arrested William Yuskowski for attempted robbery in front of 21 Corning street on the 16th. The second session of the Methodist Episcopal general conference opened in Chicago with devotions led by Rev. William Burt of Italy. Bishop E. G. The five round bout between Whistler of this city and Dave Sullivan of Boston at Eureka A C tonight was stopped in the seventeenth. Police said the men hit and clinched aggressively and the display resembled no sparring match. Referee Harry Pollock ruled a draw, drawing the ire of Herman Miller who rushed the ring and struck Pollock in Baltimore.
