Platt Sees McKinley Nomination Still Open In 1896 Fight
Ex Senator Thomas C. Platt argues the Republican nomination remains unsettled with McKinley’s rivals favored. He notes Philadelphia Press tally showing 768 delegates chosen, 193 to be elected, with McKinley 491, Reed 97, Morton 69, Cullom 12, Allison 42, Quay 56, Bradley 16, and 75 doubtful. He warns 69 contested votes from six states drop McKinley to 332, 120 short of nomination, while 18 from Indiana, 4 from Tennessee, 4 from Maryland and 2 from Kentucky also unlikely for Canton. Illinois convention votes affect only four in St Louis.

Grade Crossings Gone Brockton Abolishes All Crossings
Grade crossings within Brockton were eliminated today as the New York New Haven Hartford railroad opened a new roadbed. A passenger train from Boston to Middleboro marked the debut, with extensive work on stairs, platforms, and the new station totaling about 1 809 000 dollars. The project removed fourteen crossings over a three and a half mile stretch between Montello and Campello, aided by seven masonry bridges and massive granite arches. Granite from Quincy Cape Ann and Biddeford Maine, over 60 000 tons, and 800 000 yards of gravel were used. Campello features a 4000 foot long cut, 60 feet wide, 15 feet deep.
