California Land Grants and Kearney Bequest Revealed

The government land inquiry in California finds only one grant in the gold regions, Mariposas, a ten league square rancho once owned by Don Alvarado and later bought by Larkin for Col. Fremont. The era’s key act is Gen. Kearney’s grant of San Francisco beach and water lots to the local corporation, reserving portions for government use.
