General Bartlett signals a gubernatorial bid with multiple entrants expected against Henry M Whitney. Mayor Fitzgerald and Bartlett discuss politics in a private meeting, with Bartlett saying a race will occur and more than one entry is possible.
The Hon. Charles S. Hamlin endorsed Henry M. Whitney for governor, uniting two old Democratic factions. He praised Whitney as eminently qualified for the nomination and predicted Whitney will be the party’s standard bearer in Massachusetts.
Mrs M A Robbins of Boston died aboard the White Star Baltic as it entered New York Harbor from Liverpool. The 57 year old passenger, returning from a Holy Land cruise, died of acute diabetes. She had previously sailed on the Arabic.
Robertson Honey, counsel for W O Douglas, who is accused of robbing the Trust Company of America, will travel to Boston to confer with Josiah Quincy about possibly securing his testimony. Oliver M Dennett, also implicated, may seek Quincy as counsel. Murphy indicated the cases may go to the grand jury on Monday.
Friends of ex Mayor Josiah Quincy say the New York grand jury will act next Monday after reviewing the Douglas Dennett bond robbery. They believe Quincy’s explanation of his involvement is true. Quincy and his counsel decline further comment. He reportedly returned with depositions of a loan clerk and broker, studied by him and attorney William A. Gaston.
In New York on May 2, officers from Clyde, Mallory, Metropolitan, Eastern Steamship and Ward lines won substantial wage increases after resignations over pay. The C W Morse lines stayed firm on a sliding scale. A ship classification system and ratio of wages were agreed, with one arbitration detail to be settled within eighty days. Captain Dow called the outcome satisfactory to the crew.
President Roosevelt lauds the good wife and mother as central to national welfare. He calls her the real backbone of the home, noting her labor and anxiety while raising children. The remarks accompany his McClellan unveiling address.
President Roosevelt delivered the principal speech at the May 2 unveiling of Major-General George B. McClellan’s bronze statue in Washington. General Frederick D. Jennie Masina eleven and her sisters Teresa fifteen and Josephine three faced suffocation in a fire at a tenement block 49 and 51 Pitts Street shortly after eight last night. Jennie led the way through smoke to safety as firefighter Pillsbury C Fickett of Ladder 1 completed rescues after a daring ascent.
Smoke poured from a basement in a tenement block housing about 150 people. A child guided a Ladder 1 crew through a smoke filled doorway to safety, saving two sisters and a baby. Fire damage reached about $300 with cause undetermined.
In the Supreme Court a master teamsters injunction hearing heard that a witness left court with a bandaged head after claiming he was assaulted. Governor Guild backed police protection, while the common council denounced strike-breaker imports and a police order praised law and order.
Witness Joseph Tierney testified after being struck in what he said was by a union man while walking to dinner near Milk Street. The day featured mixed testimony on violence as Teamsters seek an injunction to restrain further acts amid a crowded, bandaged courtroom.
Worcester May 2 Leslie M Shaw former Secretary of the Treasury warned at the Worcester Board of Trade banquet that control of the Pacific Ocean is certain and that war will come at an awful cost. He noted the United States lacks ships and supplies to endure a 48 hour disruption while foreign fleets can prepare for war.
In Albany on May 3 the Senate voted 27 to 24 to deny Governor Hughes’s attempt to remove Otto Kelsey as State superintendent of insurance. The tense session extended from midnight and concluded around 1:30 AM after a day of heated debate.
The friends of James Jeffrey Roche welcomed his promotion in the consular service. President Roosevelt moved him from Genoa Italy to Berne Switzerland. He succeeds Edward Higgins of this state, reassigned to Stuttgart Sweden.
Governor Curtis Guild Jr writes master teamsters counsel assuring police protection and swift action against lawbreakers. He notes arrests evenly split between contending parties and praises last night’s order while pledging continued vigilance and support for law enforcement.
Pittsburg May 2 The announcement by Miss Madelie Gilman that she will wed President W Ellis Corey of United States Steel in New York May 13 causes grief in J B Corey the old wealthy uncle He weeps and says he will speak against divorce and marriage warning the Coreys name may be dragged into the mire by this union.
Mrs. J. H. French reported the loss of jewels valued at 89000 to police. The jewels were concealed in a waste paper basket and her son burned the contents. a search of the alley found no trace of the jewels.
The forecast calls for fair, continued cool conditions in Boston and vicinity on Friday and Saturday. In New England expect partly cloudy skies Friday and Saturday with light to fresh east winds.
