The Boston Americans defeated the New York Highlanders 9 to 4. Winter struggled early but Boston's two big innings in the second and sixth sealed the win, despite four Boston errors.
A fierce fire at the Hoagland Drug Company building 90 to 94 Canal Street shortly after 2 am caused heavy smoke and explosions in the cellar where inflammable drugs were stored. Chief Cheswell and over twenty firefighters were affected. the upper-floor firms suffered heavy smoke damage and stock loss. Fire under control within an hour.
New York May 2 Nan Patterson faces a possible acquittal or conviction in her third trial for the murder of Cesar Young. Assistant District Attorney Rand closes the prosecution case praising his method while denying suppression of evidence. Patterson vows the jury will find her not guilty.
A rapid film ignition at Shawmut Congregational Church on Tremont Street caused a panicked escape by nearly 1200 attendees mostly women and children. Sexton McNamara was badly injured while firefighters contained the blaze and restored lights.
James J Jeffries, heavyweight champion, will quit boxing and show business to join his brother Jack in California. He plans to leave the stage on May 15 after cancellations of all engagements. He says the sport does not pay and the decision is at his wife's request.
Miss Leonora Bradley, a Castle Square Theatre stock player for four years, has retired from the stage and announced her marriage to a Boston man about two years ago. A nephew of attorney Charles H. Pattee is named as the husband. Bradley left Boston for New York and will spend the summer on a farm. she was formerly married to Bartholomew, who died four years ago.
James J. O'Connor a 30 year old resident of 86 Carver Street died suddenly last night. He collapsed and died in the arms of his fiancée while sitting on a bench near the frog pond on the Common as they discussed their upcoming marriage.
Pretty Katie Murphy of 20 Winchester street is overwhelmed by shock after the death of her lover Mr O Connor who lived at 19 Winchester street and boarded with Mrs Mary McGrath at 86 Carver street. Dr Williams cited heart failure after examining the body.
Henry Guy Carleton, the playwright, was stricken with paralysis at a friend’s home in Jacksonville today. The attack is not considered dangerous, but he is very ill now. His physician reports strong hopes for recovery.

Chicago May 2 A violent clash between striking teamsters and sympathizers against police and non union workers sparked riots across the city. One man died and scores were injured as revolvers, clubs, and missiles were used in widespread street fighting near State Street and hotel doorways.
A colored girl wielding a knife chased by a colored man who tried to avoid her caused a panic in the South End last night. The man fled up Washington street into a car. the woman boarded near Dedham street and passengers rushed to exit. The car halted, the conductor separated them, and Station 5 police were summoned.
A man naming himself Nathan Levin and claiming to live on Leverett avenue near Causeway street was arrested in Arlington. He matches the description of a fire setter sought in Charlestown and Boston. Six Cambridge youths identify him as the man they tracked near Porter's Station before he boarded a car. Investigators will compare him with the wanted suspect to determine guilt or innocence.
Two incendiary fires were set within minutes near 290 and 306 West First Street in South Boston. The Jenney Manufacturing Company oil storehouse suffered exterior damage and hidden burning under the platform despite quick surveillance.
