Indications from Washington on May 2 forecast warmer fair weather for twenty four hours starting 7 am Thursday May 38 with light to fresh northerly winds becoming variable. The Weather in Boston follows.
The Asian Line steamer Circassian bound Liverpool to Montreal with 27 cabin and 800 steerage passengers, towed into Halifax by the steamer State of Nevada after a broken propeller shaft. The Nevada, en route from Larne to New York with 40 cabin and 610 steerage passengers, will transfer Circassian’s passengers to Montreal by rail.
London May 2 report says papal decree and Cardinal Monaco circular are preliminary to further Irish policy. A special congregation of cardinals reviews questions in the Irish agitation, with Cardinal Simeoni submitting at least ten points. Archbishop Walsh vows to obey the Pope yet resign if required, possibly becoming a cardinal. United Ireland calls the rescript a failure. National League branches in London and Liverpool back Parnell and dismiss the pope’s ruling.
London May 2 a large gathering of literary and political figures met in the Jerusalem chamber Westminster Abbey to discuss honoring Matthew Arnold A memorial in the abbey and a scholarship at Oxford University were proposed and agreed upon by speakers including Lord Derby Lord Coleridge Lord Rosebery and Robert Browning.
In Lonpoy May 2 the House debated a bill to close shops at 8 p.m. on five weekdays and 10 p.m. on Saturdays. Sir John Lubbock urged uniform hours for all goods, while B Bradlaugh called the bill immoral and warned it could crush enterprise. The measure was defeated 273 to 95 with no ministers speaking.
Triesty reports fifteen Buenos Ayres banking houses suspended within ten days with bank liabilities surpassing 7,000,000 pesos and government bank refusing to discount bills. Italian seaport houses suffer as uncertainty grows. Soria notes Major Popoff convicted of embezzling war office funds sentenced to four years penal servitude. Beri reports the Emperor feverish, working in his study, appetite revived, and a carriage being built for his use.
The University of Pennsylvania crew will row Yale in New London this spring, about a week before the Yale Harvard race slated for July 2. Louis Ball of Boston travels to Montreal to obtain a warrant for his nephew De Witt who allegedly stole $10,000. De Witt and his mother have left the city. Judges Gresham and Blodgett uphold the Pullman vestibule car patent and bar Wagner Palace Car Co and Lake Shore & Michigan Southern from using it via a temporary injunction. Burlington strike remains unofficially active, with workers free to return when terms allow. those not reemployed in Chicago may seek work elsewhere.
New York May 2 report shows tin declined since Friday with only two public sales. Ten tons of August tin sold at 20 cents and ten tons of May delivery at 22 cents. Other lots were reportedly neglected as the market paused.
The General Methodist conference in New York opened its second day with Bishop Merrill presiding. He reported membership growth from 1,769,584 to 2,098,985 and 450,000 new converts since the last session. The committee ruled women ineligible as delegates under current rules, promising debate tomorrow, as the conference adjourned at 1:25 PM.
Mrs W A Estey, wife of Boston Herald railroad editor and Newton Newtonville resident, died after being struck by a passenger train while crossing to catch the 7 09 train. Her husband, Mr Estey, a Newton social figure and Post 62 member, was told by their son to hurry. The accident occurred shortly after 7 PM as a freight train approached from the opposite direction. The woman collapsed after the impact, later dying in her husband’s arms.
Connecticut Democratic state delegates praised Grover Cleveland, adopting the 1884 platform and calling for tariff reform, reduced surplus, and tobacco farmers’ rights while choosing Chicago delegates. The convention highlighted divisions between white and colored delegates and favored an uninstructed showing to favor Blaine if he runs.
Fire at 4 PM destroyed the upper portion of a large double house on Main Street owned by Mrs. Dolly G. Vannevar and occupied by Rev. J Nelson Lewis and Dr. A J Stevens. Alarm 212 recorded yesterday at 8 27 in the liquor saloon of John Ferry at 776 Albany Street. Fire caused an estimated loss of 3500, with unknown injuries and scope of damage. Detectives surveyed the scene and secured the premises.
The Church Temperance Society met last evening at Tremont Temple Meionaon with Dr. G. C. Shattuck presiding. Edward Osborne reported a balance of 787 and noted progress in rescue work and coffee houses in Boston and parish branches in Charles Town and North Cambridge. Officers were elected and a resolution urged passage of the high license bill by the Massachusetts Legislature.
The Anti-Saloon Republicans of New York opened at Cooper Union led by Albert Griffin of Kansas with temporary chair General Morgan of Rhode Island. Afternoon business adopted a list of vice-presidents including ex-Governor Perham of Maine and ex-Governor Bourne of Rhode Island. committees named and speeches given before adjournment to tomorrow.
In Madison on May 2 the Wisconsin Democratic State convention elected delegates to the national convention and adopted a platform praising President Cleveland and his tariff policy. It denounces protective tariffs while favoring taxation on luxuries and supports reduced taxes aligned with Cleveland’s agenda. The nine congressional districts caucus actions were ratified, naming delegates for districts one through nine, with listed names and hometowns.
Sacramento May 2 The Republican State convention elected delegates to the national convention and endorsed Blaine. The resolutions denounced the Chinese treaty and urged abrogation of laws allowing Chinamen to land, backed protection, praised the Senate’s bond bill amendment, opposed Democratic House action on silver deposits, and urged restrictions on immigrants. They favored non sectarian schools and stronger foreign labor laws. Blaine’s name was not adopted as a candidacy but confidence in his integrity and ability was expressed.
At Columbia on May 2 ex Revenue Collector E M Brayton presided over the Republican State convention to select Chicago bound delegates. Of 125 delegates, only ten were white amid four contesting delegations. Personal clashes arose on the floor including a near confrontation between Judge Whipper and ex Congressmen Smalls as the evening drew on with mentions of John Sherman and Blaine.
Portuano Me May 2 Nomination of Congressman Tom Reed for a seventh term drew enthusiastic crowds. Judge Nathaniel Hobbs presided and praised Reed as Republican House leader and a foe of Democrats. Emmons and Freeman backed Reed, with Freeman predicting Reed as future Speaker. Blaine support shown, minor squabbles over elector choices, Reed’s supporters dominant, convention adjourned amid Blaine praise and Chicago nomination talk.
At Oma wa Nebraska the Democratic State convention backed Grover Cleveland with a solid delegation while endorsing anti trust, land grant forfeiture, veteran pensions, and anti Civil War animosity. In Dusvaur Iowa delegates remained pro Cleveland, with divisions over vice president choices and temperance planks. Springfield Illinois Republicans chose Joseph W. Fiter for governor and endorsed Senator Cullom, with a plank attacking Cleveland and Mills bill. Harrissure Pennsylvania Prohibition named John A. McConnell as chair and urged total prohibition, Bible in schools, direct vote for federal offices, and limits on immigration, adjournment set for 8:30 a.m.

Allen praises high duties for the poor while Mills bill foe, Lowell mills, loom in debate. Sherman fights Chinese treaty with amendments, facing Pacific Coast unfriendliness.
