Spain Destruction of Valparaiso Sparks South American Unity

The Valparaiso raid by a Spanish squadron over a coal dispute with Chili devastates parts of the city injuring foreign merchants. Commodore Rogers urged restraint with Britain and France but they withdrew support as the attack unfolded. The incident strengthens South American resolve and draws near unanimity against Spain. The act is condemned as cruel and criminal by the civilized world.
