London May 2 The Japanese won a sweeping victory on the Yalu River. They captured principal Russian positions and turned the Russian left flank, routing their forces. Losses are reported at least 1500 with 800 Russians and 700 Japanese killed or wounded. Japanese 47 field guns in action Sunday.
Nearly 1000 Boston area bakers walk out as 1400 journeymen push for union standards. Open shop declared in large bakeries, with about 350000 loaves at risk daily. Strikes spread to Cambridge Chelsea Brockton Lynn Salem while some towns defer one week. Massive disruption looms to city bread supply.
Philadelphia May 1 John Sheehy long held as Lipton store manager in Limerick Ireland was arrested upon disembarking the Belgian ship Friesland from Liverpool charged with embezzling several hundred pounds. British consul Powell prompted the arrest as Sheehy claimed innocence and said he was bound for the St Louis exposition. He will be heard tomorrow.
Frederick M. Gardner a prominent druggist with stores at Tremont and Washington streets was arrested by Haverhill Inspector Shannon on a blackmail charge. Bail posted. The complainant is Hanking & Christie of Haverhill, once Gardner's business partner. Police say the alleged sum was 209 dollars and the dispute involved a preparation of enafetine. Gardner resides on Montello Street Dorchester.
Three neatly dressed men, described as wearing up-to-date clothing and carrying canes, held up George L. Butters on Broadway near Dover Street last night. While two accosted him in conversation, the third rifled his pockets, taking his wallet containing about $15. Butters gave police a full description of all three: a 45-year-old with gray hair and mustache in a flashy gray suit and soft black hat, and two younger men, all similarly well dressed.
Sir Thomas Lipton, aboard his yacht Erin, dined with King Victor Emmanuel and Queen Helena in Naples. The king created Lipton a Knight Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy, honoring the prominent shipowner and yachtsman during his visit.

Tokyo reports end of six days of battle on the Yalu with Japanese victory. Russian losses about 800 and Japanese losses around 700. General Kuroki cites Russians making two stands, with strong forces including third division and elements of sixth division, plus cavalry and guns. Prisoners and officers captured, some senior commanders wounded.
On May 2 at 11 a.m. Russians were forced to abandon Antung after burning the town and retreating to Fenghuancheng. Japanese forces now control the estuary of the Yalu, setting the stage for fuller coverage on Page 5.
Last night unions met and voted to strike Sunday morning without notice to employers. Master Bakers plan to run open shops and readmit employees under last year's hours and wages. The trade will be supported as quickly as possible, with the aim to protect bread supply.
