Ex-President Cleveland Admitted to Practice in Supreme Court
Grover Cleveland, former president and New York lawyer, was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington. He arrived quietly with Attorney General Garland, was presented by Garland, and took the oath as court officials and lawmakers welcomed him. The same day the Treasury public debt statement showed a April decline of 7.6 million dollars and current totals and balances across bonds, cash, and funds.

Officials estimate a 25 percent growth in federal workers if the measure becomes law this session. The rise would add to government staff at the Springfield Arsenal and navy yards in New York Boston and other sites with a total national count of 14 500 including 2521 in New York and 988 in Massachusetts. Meanwhile House committees on Pacific railroads made formal amendments to the funding bill and postponed final action until the chairman returns next week.

Disputed Rights Open Fishing Season at Christian Lake
About 500 people from Lancaster and surrounding towns opened the fishing season at Christian Lake Stark to celebrate a New Hampshire Supreme Court ruling. The decision affirmed public access to the pond formerly claimed by the Percy Summer club. Ossian Bay led a party with U.S. Marshal Fred W. Barker to enforce access but fishing continued with about 100 trout taken and no arrests.

Gloucester Schooners Get Licenses Under Renewed Modus Vivendi
Halifax May 1 A Canso despatch says the customs collector under Ottawa orders issued licenses under the renewed modus vivendi to Gloucester schooners Mist and Thetis. If granted a week earlier, Canso license receipts would be about 3000 dollars higher as much of the American fleet left for Newfoundland and the Magdalen Islands. Several American vessels arrived for licenses as well. All agree the Bank cod fishery cannot be sustained with Canadian baiting provisions.
