New York May 1 A colossal civic and military parade drew about 80 000 participants with 70 000 in line including German American and Irish American contingents. The central exhibit featured allegorical floats and tableaux honoring industry science and liberty as President Harrison watched from Madison Square.
Crowds gathered along the parade route as the final civic procession celebrated Washington's inauguration and a century of national life. The weather was clear and cool, with stands filling early and ships and troops illustrating industrial progress and national pride.
