Boston Post cheer in Washington letters from home

The Boston Post brings cheer to the Sixth Massachusetts and other regiments in the Capitol. Soldiers report letters from New England, praise Gen. Butler, and describe drill, hospital duties, and religious services in the Senate Chamber. News covers rail disruptions, battlefield readiness, and arrival of new volunteers.

Armistice Rumor Denied in Washington Dispatch

A Washington dispatch denies an armistice, noting the claim was false and the government ended such negotiations on March 4. It reports railroad travel resuming via Baltimore and York Pa, with troops massing in the South and free black men pressed for service. Paris letters say the French government remains informed on American affairs and shows no sympathy for the Confederate States.

Arrival of Troops and Fort Madison Rockets Stirs Annapolis

In Annapolis on April 30 the garrison was called to arms after rockets and cannon were fired at Fort Madison. Troops were supplied with five rounds each and slept on their arms in anticipation of a Baltimore demonstration. No new arrivals occurred today. The Coatzacoalos sailed for Washington last night. There are 4000 troops present and order is perfect. Transports depart for Perryville twice daily as great efforts intensify to move stores to Washington.
