Maine city suffers worst fire since 1866 blaze
The rapid blaze consumed many structures in Bangor including the Morse-Oliver and Graham buildings and the Gaiety Theatre. Insurance men call it the worst Maine has seen since Portland 1866, with one half the city said to be in ruins as rain and east wind helped hold the flames. Mayor Mullen said the fire was under control and vowed Bangor would recover.
