Gloucester Sailors Report Busy Harbor Trade And Incidents

The Gloucester schooner Preceptor arrived with 80,000 pounds of halibut caught off Cape George, as Captain Penny embarks on his first voyage in the vessel after six weeks at sea. A free fight broke out aboard, quickly halted by the Guardian. The British barkentine Reynard had a collision on its way to Philadelphia, damaging the Lucy A. Davis, which was towed. The P. O’Riordan tug is back in service after overhaul. The Allanne steamer Norwegian arrived at Mystic Wharf with 48 second cabin and 158 steerage passengers, many from Scotland and Ireland, with several young women seeking domestic service. Captain Moor noted strong westerlies and clear seas since Galway, passing near the Virgin Rocks, while the Cambrian King and Teutonia were overdue. Two large ocean liners left port, the Philadelphian and the Merion, carrying cargo and livestock. The Bonavista is now serving between Cape Breton and Montreal, after extensive repairs and a new electric light plant. The Dorchester arrived at Providence with crew from the H. J. Raymond, which sank offshore. The Raymond’s 3,000th voyage began in Bath, Maine, with a lumber cargo. Fifteen fish landings yielded haddock, cod, hake, pollock and cask, as the Helen B. Thomas and other schooners brought in sizable hauls. Vessels are fitting out for seining amid the Gloucester trades.
