South African special commissioner in New York reports that envoys Fischer Wessels and Wolmorans will sail May 3. London reports from the Orange Free State say the Boers left Thabanchu not to retreat but to occupy stronger lines. General Dewet attacked General H's eastern flank on April 29 but was repelled by cavalry. Boers hold eastern ridges and may fallback under greater British pressure. Fugitives Dunstan and Frank Shaw sighted near Ripton

Dunstan Shaw and his son Frank Shaw, wanted for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Hoffman, were seen at the home of George Flanders near Ripton ten miles from Middlebury. Flanders and his family were arrested for concealing the fugitives. Deputies reportedly surrounded the area, but the Shaws had already left.
