A Rochester and Lake Ontario excursion train left the track near Rosenbaur's Corners. Two killed and at least a dozen seriously injured as passengers were pulled from debris by rescue workers. Dozens more were lightly hurt or suffered facial injuries.
A derailment caused by a separated engine toppled a coach and tore a platform. Passengers including two women and a child were crushed and injured while others were rescued and sent to the hospital. John Hilberg was crushed to death between cars. Emma Teufel suffered severe injuries and believed her parents were killed. George Brasser sustained a compound forearm fracture as rescuers worked to free victims.
Inspectors Abbott and Gilmore arrested two men, John Lombard and James Lowe, prompted by a January 1895 alert. Lombard, a famed safecracker, had evaded capture before. a room search at 33 Corning Street yielded a list of Massachusetts towns with banks and various pathfinders and railroad guides.
Officers Sumner and McPharland pursued Harrison Atkins and John McDonald after they robbed Gerlach & Co. of 360 cigars worth 21. Atkins fled on foot then leaped onto a moving cab as a mob formed. Atkins, injured by plate glass, was captured at Pearl and Purchase streets and charged with breaking and entering.
A 4 year old girl Gertrude Marcus narrowly escaped serious injury when she ran in front of Beltline electric car No 2090. Motorman Peter Feeney braked hard and stopped the car before lifting the child from the track. She suffered only a slight scalp wound and was later returned home.
Miss Bessie M. Scudder, the woman who jumped from the New York express while insane Friday afternoon, was in a worse condition at Worcester City Hospital last night. Her death is considered only a question of hours.
A major Dover Street blaze caused about 150000 in damages. Reserve Officer Lane suffered severe burns while saving others, and District Chief Grady jumped to protect himself and was hospitalized. Hundreds displaced as Commissioner Russell warns the block was a fire trap and nearby structures faced danger. City apparatus damage added to losses.
Thief disguised as a colored man in ashman garb stole jewelry and cash valued around $860000 from the 473 Columbus Avenue residence of William T. Faunce and his family. The break occurred at about 3 PM Thursday, remained unseen until 6 PM, and investigators seek the intruder with no clear explanation given for his presence.
District Chief Grady of District S suffered a ruptured right foot ligament and a badly sprained ankle after a hot air explosion. Reserve Officer John Lane of Station 5 was burned on neck and head while rescuing children, treated and returned to duty. Ladderman George Croft of Ladder 8 suffered a severe back sprain after being struck by a hose nozzle. Hoseman Charles E Whiting of Engine 1 cut by glass with a lacerated foot, treated at Emergency Hospital.
Pet John B Walsh aged 14 of 44 Troyn Street was struck by falling slate injuring nose bridge. Edward J Pitzgerald of 164 Sixth Street South Boston received a scalp wound from falling slate at Emergrency Hospital. Assistant Superintendent Eugene Bringtton reports a right head cut from falling glass after an explosion. Hoseman Vlark &%. Sibles of Fugine 2 sustained a severed right wrist from flying glass at 11 Fairland Street. treated at City Hospital.
Fire damages a brick six story structure at 2400 260 Dover Street owned by J W Heehe estate. Loss estimated at 150000 with breakdowns for building machinery and contents including New England Screw Co Hovey Hard Co novelties Goodwin Cummings and others.
