Ad valorem wool duties favored by growers and makers
The report from Wasurxctox outlines new ad valorem rates for wool. 32 percent on wool valued at 13 cents per pound or less, and 50 percent on higher grades, aligning closely with proposed equivalents. The changes remove duplicate duties on washed or scoured wool and clarify camel hair taxation. May 1, 189? officials noted railway mail service appointments and Fremont’s retirement.

Markets Rise and Fall as London and New York React
The New York market stayed strong most of yesterday with peak prices seen during the advance. A late drop followed Philadelphia bank distress, but the tone remains bullish and conditions favor further gains in speculative stocks. Observers note Osceola’s projected 300 tons monthly output and 7 percent earnings, while silver weakness in London ties to India’s trade and lower interest. Jay Gould signals willingness to preserve rate agreements amid traffic sharing, and chatter about Atchison expansion is dismissed as nonsense. Union Pacific bonds and funding bills loom, with broker attention on Chicago rate talks and silver. NYSE seats fall from 35,000 to 20,000, with many mortgaged and some Philadelphia seats trading down. Telegraph and railroad news span Boston to Portland, with Port facilities and a new union passenger station planned. Mint shipments fall short of last year, silver stockpiles rising as congress delays rollbacks.

Will of Actor William Warren Enlivens Estate Details
The late actor William Warren named George O. Dunlay and Orson Smith of Chicago as executors. He left most of his estate to his brother Henry Warren and a sister. Inventory valued the estate at 210,699.92 but the first account rose to 214,548.55. Executors sought 11,371.37 in fees and expenses, including 3,000 for travel between Boston and Chicago. Judge McKim initially approved, but Henry Warren challenged, leading to a revision reducing services to 5,045.21 and disallowing the 3,000 item.
