Pension legislation debate to expand veteran support
Congress debated a per diem pension bill favored by Union veterans associations and opposed by Republicans. The bill would grant $8 monthly pensions to disabled survivors aged 60 plus widows, with broader invalid pensions at $8 monthly. After extensive talks, the Morrill bill was passed as a Senate substitute, with strong objections about speed and scope unresolved. The House adjourned at 6 20.
