A three sided clash among Acting Mayor Dra per Fire Commissioner Wells and civil service commissioners ended with a truce granting the 25 temporary firemen a ten day grace. The civil service board calls Wells action a gross injustice while Wells deems the board stance absolutely unfair.
Charles Warren denounces recent discharge orders as unlawful. He says temporary hires made last December bypass authority and harm about 140 men on the eligible Boston fire force list. Warren warns that officials may appoint men for one to four months or longer, creating a grave injustice.
Commissioner Wells calls the chairman’s Civil Service Commission statement unfair and promises a public reply tomorrow morning. He says he will post his response to the statement.

Miss Margaret Jane Hood 29 well known in South Boston society was found dead in bed as gas from a single jet filled the room. Her mother recalls two weeks of illness and suspects the gas light went out overnight then relit, though Hood had moved to a different room. She had worked at Taylor Bros laundry in Dorchester and aided her mother.
The House substituted Weeks bill with police credentialed labor representatives by 115 to 85. Debate featured Ross and McEttrick defending the measure against Luce Norcross and Dwight who warned of state endorsement of warfare and infringement on non union workers. A roll call showed a split, with numerous members voting yes and no while several paired to show support or opposition.

Augusta Maine March 29 The state showed graphic evidence in the case against Mrs. Alice F Cooper. Surgeons strapped a human body to a plank and tested a revolver blamed for Charles Northy Jr s death They filled his skull with a brain from another body and watched Mrs Cooper closely as experts described the grisly procedure. The doctors testified that Northy s death was instantaneous countering the defense argument he walked to a chair after shooting himself.
Dr. Frank N. Whittier described the skull of Charles D. Northy Jr being scalped bones boiled and bleached with hydrogen peroxide as part of medical demonstrations. Mrs. Cooper listened as testimony covered shooting a dead body and rabbit killings in the school, illustrating the disturbing procedures.
Mrs. Lamora Whittier was arrested in Hyde Park on a warrant charging her with being a party to the abduction of her daughter Blanche, 15. A hearing is scheduled tomorrow before Justice A. V. Wissell. Blanche had been living with her father F. H. McFarland, a Hyde Park lawyer and town officer, who had custody after Connecticut courts separated the couple.
A two week old baby girl was discovered in a hall at 33 Travers Street last evening. Mrs. Robert Peattie heard faint cries about 8:15 and found a white face peeking from a bundle at the foot of the stairs.
A two day strike talk failed to resolve wage demands for bituminous miners. Estimated losses include 1902 figures of 190 days idle and rail and operator losses totaling tens of millions of dollars. Impending action could halt 600,000 miners with daily wage losses around 1.22 million dollars.
A baby found by Mrs. Peattie was taken to the Chardon Street Home by Patrolman George Keyes. Indianapolis March 29 The order by John Mitchell to quit work on April 2 will put 260000 hard coal miners on strike with 450000 soft coal workers likely to follow after a conference between union officials and mine owners ended without agreement. Hard coal seeks about 8 percent raise and arbitration rules while soft coal requests 5.55 percent. President Baer refuses. Miners plan a national convention tomorrow and Roosevelt may be asked to prevent a wider strike affecting 600000 workers.
The joint conference was called to order at 2 30. The motion by President Mitchell to adopt the 1903 wage scale as amended by Mr Robbins of western Pennsylvania operators, seconded by Mr Mitchell, was passed for two years.
