Chongju Battle In Korea Reports Russians Retreat After Heavy Losses

A Seoul despatch says the first major land engagement of the war occurred at Chongju near Pingyang. Six Cossack companies faced four Japanese cavalry squadrons, later joined by infantry, and after about three hours of fierce fighting the Russians withdrew. Casualties may reach 300. The Japanese took heavier losses as a squadron was exposed to fire while attempting to enter the town.

Court sentences Ham to 15 to 20 years in Boston prison

Wallace H. Ham is sentenced by the court to a term of not less than 15 nor more than 20 years in a State prison in Boston Suffolk county. The first day will be in solitary confinement and the remaining time in hard labor. The remark was made by Clerk Manning while the sentence was pronounced.

Luella Howe, 27, of Dorchester, left Northboro after visiting family and boarded a 7:15 trolley to Dorchester. She was last seen bidding her father goodbye and has not been located since, with relatives anxious and assumptions about her well being being questioned by family and police.

Fire at 223 Harrison avenue fills the house with smoke as two women on the second floor and a man with a baby in his arms attempt to jump. New Suspect in Randolph Murder Emerges

Randolph March 29 authorities have a new suspect in the Parker Dexter shooting case. An arrest may come within 24 hours on the charge of killing the boy in his father’s house last Sunday as a box of 38 caliber bullets and eight 38 caliber shells found in the Dexter home are cited as key evidence.
