The Barre murder inquiry into Fred Batchelder’s death on March 16 ended with the arrest of Raymond Mullen, 23, of Montreal a professional nurse on a murder charge. He is jailed in Montpelier awaiting a Saturday hearing and denies the accusation.
Mullen arrived in Barre six weeks earlier and boarded at a well known house with Batchelder and Roy Sykes. After a late lunch prepared by Mullen, Batchelder died two days later from arsenic poisoning found in his stomach. Sykes recovered after illness. State's Attorney obtained a warrant for Mullen. Tablets found on him sent for analysis. No murder motive given.
The joint scale committee for Illinois Indiana Ohio and western Pennsylvania coal operators reports a disagreement after a three hour session with the central competitive district. The wage scale expires Saturday and 225 000 miners in four states may strike if no agreement is reached.
Afternoon discussions show sides no nearer agreement than in January. Phil Penna of Indiana operators proposed arbitration to settle differences but offered no plan. The session adjourned until tomorrow with no votes taken.
