March Poem and Civil War News in Boston Gazette
A column mixes verse on March with news briefs from Boston and national events. Reports include Dumollard’s execution in France, a submarine battleship idea in Philadelphia, and legal notices. Union dispatches describe Winchester and Big Bethel reconnaissance, casualty tallies, and Gen Shields’s improving condition.
Confirmations and measures on imports and telegraph supervision
The Senate confirmed Lewis S. Ely as Consul at Acapulco and H. Jones Brooke as Captain and Subsistence Commissioner. A bill limits duty refunds on arms for States to contracts made before 1862 with proof of foreign purchase cost. An order restricts liquor passage at ferries without a General Officer pass. Telegraph supervision focuses on military movement secrecy while political and private matters remain free. Prisoners discharged at Nashville are listed.
