A race riot 12 miles east of Jasper, Alabama, erupted this afternoon with about 150 shots exchanged. Casualties are not yet confirmed. A farmer sought ammunition around 7 PM and returned. Sheriff Moore requested Governor Jelks to mobilize the local militia as tension mounts.
Albert T Patrick, lawyer, convicted of the 1900 murder of William Marsh Rice, whose estate nears seven million dollars. Jury deliberated three hours after a nine-week trial amid courtroom tension. Sentencing to follow, with a new trial motion probable.

In New York at 500 Madison Avenue William Marsh Rice dies on Sept 23 1990. On Sept 24 a teller is offered a 26000 check in Rice handwriting but with the name Abert T Patrick. Bank staff doubt authenticity and delay. The forger David L Short then presents the check to Patrick who endorses it. Eric Swenson halts payment and Rice is later said to be dead. A second 5000 check follows.

Enrique Santibanez, second secretary of the Mexican embassy, collapsed and died this afternoon in Washington. He had been stationed at the embassy for about 16 years and was described as consumptive with poor health of late. He arrived in the city with former Minister Senor Romero.
Senator Quay returned to the White House to press the President to keep Mr. Powderly as immigration commissioner. Pennsylvania lawmakers Senator Quay and Representative Connell urge retention, with Connell also slated to meet the President tomorrow on the same matter.
Washington March 26 The House elections committee ruled for Emmett Tompkins over John J. Lentz in the Columbus Ohio district contest alleging irregularities at the polls. The committee will file its report next week.
Ley Han cock was jailed for three months in Newburg after a confrontation with Judge Sherwood of Fishkill. Previously fined $15, Hancock improvised a sneering remark prompting the longer sentence. Their first meeting in 15 years stemmed from a long standing political dispute.

Washington March 26 a statement from a Republican source asserts that the Cuban reciprocity measure agreed upon by the recent conference would secure enough Republican votes in the ways and means committee to pass it without any Democratic support. The claim challenges the committee’s understood dynamics and suggests the bill will be reported by Republicans only.
New York March 2. The suit of E Rollins Morse of Boston against the Montana Ore Purchasing company was resumed before Commissioner Klein with no testimony. Both sides agreed to a postponement to the last day in April as Franklin Bien could not serve subpoenas on several Amalgamated Copper Company directors.
Ex President and Mrs Cleveland Professor and Mrs Finley and Miss Bryant of New York left Princeton on Colonel Larmont’s private car for Stuart, Alabama. They plan to return in about a week, while Mr Cleveland and Dr Bryant will stay another fortnight.
From Paris on March 26 it is reported that W. K. Vanderbilt Jr and D. W. Bishop were arrested while driving through Le Luc for speeding and failing to display lights. They were held at the station house until morning and then released.
Marconi passed through Montreal this evening on his way to New York. The report notes his swift passage through the city during his continental journey.
The school board rehired Rev. B. M. Muncie, principal of Meridian Street School, who had been dismissed last Monday on a charge of attempting to kiss a female pupil. The move followed a petition signed by the parents of every student at the school.
InYork on March 2 Ida Istson aged 48 leaped into the East River with her seven weeks old infant. The infant was lost and later the mother was recovered dead. Michael McCarthy, who helped in the rescue, was pulled into the river and drowned.
In Montreal on March a fare war began with New England points. The Rutland railroad announced a cut of 1 in eastern excursion rates to Worcester Springfield and Boston, signaling intensified competition in the region.
Frederick James was held in for the Buffalk grand jury by Judge Burke in Municipal Court yesterday on charges of forging two notes for 65 and 75 dollars. Complainant Mrs. Adeline Getchall says she discounted the notes.
John H. Fitspatrick former Chicago police inspector and former chief of detectives died tonight in Chicago. Funeral arrangements were not disclosed and his career included leading detective bureau work for years.
John Conroy 17 of 2% A Street Patrick Shortell 18 of 16 B Street and Colemian Mulhern 19 of 15 Fifth Street South Boston were captured after a boat crossing to Albany Street. They ran from police pursued by four squads after leaving the boat tied to a schooner off Albany wharf. A fourth youth escaped. The trio faced breaking and entering charges and were jailed at South Boston station. Estimated iron theft reported but no metal found.
New Jersey trial recounts alleged abuse of two year old Gwendolin Haines. Witnesses including Mrs Jour Palfrey describe beating, slapping, and a powder given for nerves. Doctors Parsons and Small cite wounds and meningitis as death cause with conflicting arsenic link. Chemist Moerk reports arsenic found in organs.
Daniel Harris of the New York Cigarmakers' International Union informed police that men were selling forged union cigar box labels in the city. Detectives arrested two men, Albert Goldman and David Bartlestone, after they tried to sell 20,000 labels for $800 at a cigar factory. Both face second degree forgery charges.

Textile Council vote was unanimous to strike Saturday noon if demands are not met, with unions confident of victory and mill owners threatening closures to resist. State Arbitration Board tried to mediate. outcome hinges on mill agents agreeing to a 10 percent raise.
