Ex congressman Urner of Maryland was hosted in Baltimore last week where he compared himself to George Washington. He praised the river and harbor grab, slopping over in support of the policy, according to the Washington Capital.
An English man was sentenced to six months hard labor for hanging a son by the heels and flogging him with a belt for nearly half an hour. The judge noted the brutality rivaling abuses at the Maine Institution where mistreatment of small boys drew little punishment beyond mild chiding.
The Salem Register notes expected full attendance at the special stockholders meetings of the Boston and Maine and Eastern railroads tomorrow. It predicts rising earnings for the Eastern may spur strong opposition, as many stockholders seek better value for their investments than approving the proposed lease.

A winter storm swept through LuncunvinG Virginia bringing heavy snow from yesterday evening through today. West of Lynchburg the snowfall intensified. In Raleigh North Carolina snow fell yesterday and today with Greensborough reporting two feet and Henderson three feet of snow, telegraph lines down from Greensborough north, and houses toppled under the weight of the snow at Kittrell.
In Chelsea mason Charles J. Lord received a discharge in June 1880. Creditors petitioned in May 1882 seeking revocation on grounds of fraud. Judge McKim ordered a judgment for petitioners and ruled the discharge null and void, the first such revocation in Suffolk County.
Nashville report notes a new bill passed both houses allowing pools to be sold on all races but restricted to blood horse associations and fairs. It bans sales to minors or intoxicated persons. Previously pools could not be sold on any aces run outside the state.

The Crescent Boat Club held its first annual hall event at Old Fellows Hall on a Monday eve ning. The Weston Associates held its annual hall at Paine Memorial hall on Easter Monday, opening with a promenade concert and finishing with dances to Cadet band music. Supper followed at 11:39 for 200 couples, with floor director F. Backoff assisted by P. Murphy and aides.
John Mehoney also known as Jack Redwood was arrested Monday morning for highway robbery committed in Charlestown Sunday night. Miss Annie Richardson who was reported missing from her Brighton home has returned after visiting a friend in Boston. John E. Foley two years old died after illness at Centre House Friend Street consumption. William Whittaker 31 fell and fractured his left leg at Commercial Street and Eastern Avenue and was taken to City Hospital. Joseph Clark and George King fought at 22 North Square. Clark allegedly drew a knife, inflicting three cuts, and was jailed on assault with a knife charges.
Rumor swirls in Nashua New Hampshire on March 26 about injuries to Mrs. Michael Winn of Vine Street. She suffered two scalp wounds and a fractured skull with doctors extracting twelve bone pieces yesterday. Her husband Michael Winn was alone with her when, it is claimed, she fell on the stove and summoned a neighbor who witnessed the incident.
Samuel Mansur of Munroe fell through a scuttle in a Bangor store on Monday and sustained injuries likely to prove fatal. A coroner’s jury in the John Bartlett case exonerated the Eastern railroad company after Bartlett lost an arm and died following amputation. Henry A. Gooding of Yarmouth was killed when a gun discharged during inspection by Josian S. Loring. Herring prices averaged 90 to 100 cents, Maine herring catch down 13.41 million from last winter. Sarah S. Martin of South Auburn praised for fine stock and a eight foot four inch girth stalwart bull aged 3 years 9 months. Bangor aldermen elect Cummings as mayor. W. F. Reed marshal. The Catholic Total Abstinence union of New Hampshire will convene in Manchester on April 5. Seth W. Prescott hanged himself in his East Northwood barn. he was 50, leaves a widow and family. Two Montreal men visited Portsmouth and the navy yard, prospecting for a winter terminus of the Allan Steamship line. The old Franklin Pierce property near Concord may host an Episcopal girls school per Bishop Niles. The State Normal School at Plymouth held a board meeting. Rev. George B. Spaulding presided. Prof. Warren’s resignation was accepted and a successor to be chosen next session.
Henry Barrell who was violently assaulted at Windsor last January has recovered. The bail of his alleged assailants has been reduced to $1,000 each.
Catherine McCenn of Chicopee sues Father Healy for libel seeking 10 000 dollars claiming a priest’s denouncement harmed her business. A Sandwich resident George H. Dennis died by suicide at Taunton Lunatic Asylum weeks earlier. East Congregational parish Barnstable held its annual meeting with funds and pulpit provisions approved. Hopkinton completes a new town house costing under 16 000 dollars with Queen Anne styling and a 600 seat main hall plus 100 in the gallery.
