Self-Fleeting Windlass Aims To Ease Ship Work
Mr Nichols presents an improved windlass for the schooner Spitfire offering constant relative cable position through iron whelps and rollers. The device, called self fleeting though not fleet, increases power, dispenses with gripping, and adapts to other windlasses for heavy tasks. Models are at Merchants' Exchange Reading Room and Priest Ayling store.

He remained beside her as the car filled, withdrew the purse from her pocket, and escaped by alighting in Essex street. Police traced him by description, and he was identified in Court Square. He had over 200 in gold on arrest, with evidence of a $100 bill exchange matching the theft.

Polk says increase in naval and military forces needed
James K. Polk urges Congress to promptly strengthen the nation’s defense in response to ongoing Oregon tensions with Great Britain and unsettled Mexico relations. He cites recent wartime preparations by Britain and advises expanding land and sea forces, while aiming for peaceful relations with both powers and safeguarding national rights. The message was read in Senate and ordered printed.
