Boston Finance Chief Grilled Over Hidden 1917 Attic Find

The Hon. John R. Murphy, chair man of the Boston Finance Commission, faced a sharp two hour grilling by U S District Attorney Asa P. French for not dis closing to the grand jury and the bankruptcy receiver that 17116 was found in Jacob Matchmaker estate attic. Murphy said he told anyone who asked and was not asked by the grand jury or receiver. The exchange raised questions of veracity between Murphy and David Stoneman, counsel for the receiver.

Fire Rages Through Dorchester House Endangering Maid

A $4500 blaze tore through a two and a half story wooden dwelling at 22 Wolcott street Dorchester early today. Mary Levins a maid nearly suffocated in her attic bed as two families fled in night clothes to the street with minutes to spare before their homes became a furnace.

Mary Levins and two Davis children were roused on the second floor while three Comins children woke to a citizen’s alarm on the first floor. Wind driven embers sprayed roofs as residents rushed to the street. Firemen found the maid missing in the attic and rescued her unconscious after a ladder was extended.

Poet Mistral Dies in France at Age 93

Frederic Mistral the celebrated Provencal poet dies in Marseilles at his 93rd year. He shared the 1904 Nobel prize for literature with Jose Echegaray and was a friend of Colonel Roosevelt who he dedicated a poem to in 1904. He wrote most works in Provencal and his famed Mireille appeared in 1859.

Mayor Curley urged the Legislature's rules committee to admit his bill to cut police salaries raised by Mayor Fitzgerald. He attacked the raises as improper, burdensome to taxpayers, and harmful to city finances and departmental efficiency.
